£10 Steak Frites deal at Kilmurry & Co Shawlands

We’ve been meaning to try out the Steak Frites deal at Kilmurry & Co Shawlands for a while now.  It seemed too good to be true, the price and this price from 4pm on a Friday and Saturday.

5.30pm on a Saturday night and the place was empty, so much so the kitchen staff were chilling with the manager.  We asked if the Steak deal was still running and we’re shown to a window side table.  Watch out you don’t pick the one with the cracked window….

We ordered a couple of drinks, one of which was a glass of Project Wines Malbec.  After spending the day at Edinburgh Uncorked, we thought we’d continue our wine journey…We should have stayed alcohol free – A rating of 2.2 out of 5 from Mark.   Medium Ruby colour. Has a “rough’ wine aroma with a little strawberry. Dry, acidic and quite acrid. Tastes a cheap bottle of plonk. Not really finding many positives with this..

Hopefully the Steak would be better!

The steaks arrived and we were impressed for the price.  Would they taste good?

There was a choice of three sauces, bearnaise, peppercorn or hollandaise, which we discovered was an extra £2 after as we hadn’t been given any menus due to just ordering the steaks.

A healthy portion of crisp chips alongside a bavette Steak which was cooked a little more than medium rare as asked.

Bavette is also known as flank Steak and is ideal for quick cooking.  It is a lean piece of meat which is generally flavoursome.

Generally, this was OK. For this price point, sitting in somewhere it is acceptable.  However, there was no anticipation for this steak from my nose or eyes really.  More suited for a steak sandwich with other flavourings to add some oomph.  The vinegary bearnaise added nothing to the dish, the peppercorn sauce was creamy and pungent.

We took half of one of the steaks home for Cleo, she gave it a good sniff and moved over for some cat food….oh dear.

Verdict

OK, a functional meal.

Watch out for the cracked glass in the main door as well.

Friendly service, but ….but.

Toilets were clean but damp smelling and the dryers are outside the toilets so you have to wash your hands first and then open the door with them wet!
