Tusk rescue and restoration project

Can you help restore the former Tusk / Waverley Cinema?

Sam Amdjadi at GodShot Studio on Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands is looking to assemble a Tusk Steering Committee to regenerate the old Tusk and Waverley Tearooms building on Moss-Side Road and turn it into an independent cinema and cafe. It actually was originally built as The Waverley Cinema and remained active as a picture house until 1973.

Most recently one side of the building operated as a G1/Scotsman Group bar and restaurant, The Waverley Tearooms but it closed in 2017. Tusk bar, restaurant and nightclub occupied the main body of the restaurant and closed in 2009.

Before that, it had also been home to a bingo hall, and snooker hall at different times. Plans drawn up in 2019 to turn it into a Wetherspoons pub were shelved in 2023 due to spiralling costs which had doubled since plans were first envisaged, a potential casualty of COVID price rises and so the building has lain empty for the last few years.

Sam is now looking for interest in restoring this iconic building to its intended use. Significant positive interest has already been received from the local community but the next step is to get interest from further afield, from bodies who are interested in turning the project into a reality as it will require a lot of work, money and commitment to revive and re-use a much-loved local building.
