South Indian Cuisine at Madurai
Madurai opened its doors in 2024 at the bottom of the stunning old Hatrack building at 144 St Vincent Street, we ventured along to try out their lunch deal.
Named after the South Indian city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, which is famous for its architecture, it is fitting that the restaurant is located in such a landmark building.
The interior is tastefully decorate with a variety of seating from banquette style to traditional wooden chairs.

Lunch Menu
3-course lunch for £12.95 or a thali for £14.95, Monday to Friday, 12–3pm.
What we ate and drank
A couple of soft drinks to keep us hydrated. Also available were a wide range of alcoholic drinks.
Chicken Pakvada – Crispy chicken tenders in a delicately spiced batter. Starter was perfectly cooked with a nice element of heat to it.
Potato Bonda – Soft potato dumplings in a chickpea flour batter. Soft and fluffy balls which packed a sneaky punch.
Chicken Ghassi – Chicken simmered in creamy coconut milk with paprika and sun dried curry leaves. Main was reasonably creamy but a little dry as well, a little heat to it but not too much. Portion size was perfect for lunch, just filling enough
Inji Lamb – Lamb infused with ginger and a hint of black pepper. This smelled delicious, however there was too much black pepper for me which overpowered the dish, I didn’t feel like the spices had been cooked off as much as they could have leaving a dry, powdery aftertaste.
Verdict
Friendly and quick service, food was tasty if a little spicy for this time of day. Will return to try more of the menu.
