Step back in time with afternoon tea at this glorious ancestral home

Afternoon tea is a rightly so popular activity and it is even better when you are surrounded by history and beauty. We visited Pollok House which is set within Pollok Country Park in Glasgow to visit the ancestral home of the Stirling Maxwell family and have afternoon tea in what was their dining room.

You may recognise Pollok House from Outlander, and if you book afternoon tea, you can sip tea near to the gardens around Pollok House which were used as Castle Leoch, where Claire gathers medicinal herbs.

When you book afternoon tea at Pollok House, you also get access to the house so you are free to roam about the rooms and take in the history.

What to expect

Unlimited tea and coffee are served regularly to your table. Other teas are also available, e.g. camomile or peppermint, just ask your server who will bring a pot to your table.

On the top tier: ham and English mustard ciabatta, Applewood smoked cheddar and onion chutney ciabatta, Brie and bacon tart, and a pork pie each.

The middle tier had both fruit and plain buttermilk scones with jam and cream.

While the bottom tier comprised Victoria sponge, dark chocolate and lemon posset, chocolate eclair and a strawberry tart each.

Verdict

Step back in time to Edwardian Britain with afternoon tea at Pollok House, which has been described by the National Trust for Scotland as ‘Scotland’s answer to Downton Abbey’. This is one afternoon tea spot where you can almost feel what it was like back in the day.

Well-balanced tiers of sweet and savoury, as more often than not afternoon teas sway towards sweet and sugary items with only a bare minimum of savoury items, usually sandwiches, which can leave you feeling a bit ill and in a sugar coma afterwards! Here we had sandwiches, a tart and pork pie and dainty scones, with as much tea or coffee as you want.

This was a relaxing afternoon spent enjoying the food and feel of Pollok House. As well as fellow couples we also spied some tourists and we think this would be a perfect treat for mum, auntie or granny, or indeed anyone who loves an afternoon tea.
