A vibrant new food and produce market, The Rail Yard, is set to open in Glasgow’s West End
Nestled alongside the river Kelvin between Gibson St and Great Western Road, The Rail Yard market promises to be a dynamic hub for locally produced food, community engagement, and environmental sustainability.
After opening its doors on 10th May, the Rail Yard will have daily traders operating between 8:00-19:00 – 7 days a week alongside a Saturday farmers market from 10:00-15:00.
Supporting Local Businesses and the Economy
The Rail Yard aims to bolster the local economy by providing opportunities for micro-scale businesses. Daily traders offering hot food, artisan coffee and health-focused offerings will have a platform to showcase their products.
Additionally, a weekly farmers’ market every Saturday, focused on Slow Food production, will feature premium Scottish produce, including high-quality fish from the west coast of Scotland, directly from the produce. All traders will focus on healthy living and sustainable farming practices.
Enhancing the Natural Environment
The driving force behind the Rail Yard, Stuart Collins, emphasised many ways the site is committed to “helping maintain and look after the park”. Initiatives include providing dog bowls for park pets, bike repair stations, and landscaping efforts to enhance biodiversity. Collaborations with local ecologists and landscapers will continue to ensure the area thrives ecologically.
Engaging the Local Community
Community engagement is at the heart of The Rail Yard. Employed full-time, the community engagement officer will oversee local outreach and organise events that foster a sense of community and connection among residents.
The Rail Yard is more than just a food market; it’s a celebration of local produce, sustainable living, and community spirit. Its opening on 10th May marks the beginning of a new chapter for Glasgow’s West End, offering a space where food, nature, and community come together.
