Glasgow restaurant turns menu prices to 1984 for 40th birthday

The Baby Grand is celebrating its 40th birthday by turning prices back to 1984 prices.  The Charing Cross institution will be serving their special menu every Wednesday, until well we don’t know, so grab it whilst you can.

We settled down, ordered a bottle of wine, and headed back in time.  Note from my personal sommelier. “Difficult to assess. Really rough at first, so could do with decanting or airating. After a while it became drinkable. Aromas of mocha, cocoa and tastes of plum and cherry. Dry, high acidity”

In no time at all our starters arrived.

£2.00 soup of the day which was lentil, was there any other soup (well Scotch Broth!) in the 80’s in Scotland?  (Pea and Ham… from a chicken maybe?) Not as thick as Mark likes it, however a warming portion of soup for this glorious weather.

£2.75 marinated herring on rye bread.  The most non rye bread looking rye I have seen, and I remember rye bread then.  The herring was tangy and soft, with the sour cream sauce perfect.

£7.50 Steak, which you can’t complain about at all.  A moist piece of beef served with gravy and crisp fries.

£4.80 New York burger.  A chonk of meat topped with pastrami, a wee bit more of the dressing would have been good, however, would that take it over the price point?

The pianist arrived as we were eating, so we had a prime seat for some music and finishing off our wine.

Verdict

For the price, an excellent meal and I don’t remember feasting so well in 1984.  I was a few years behind to discover The Baby Grand and then it was mostly for tea/coffee and brunch.  Celebrate the 40th Birthday of The Baby Grand with some bargain food.
