Five at Phillies, Shawlands

We try the food at Five at Phillies in Shawlands

Five at Phillies has been open since Spring this year, we’ve had the pleasure of supping beers there, however today we decided to get some food to go along with our drinks.

The food side of the operation here is operated by Five March, which has a site on Elderslie Street and is renowned for its delicious food.

It seems like we are not the only ones who like the vibe in Phillies, it was a busy night in here with a few dog guests as well.

Menu at Five at Phillies

A variety of dishes on offer from burgers to loaded fries to salads.  The only minus here no note to what is vegan and vegetarian friendly.

What we ate

Mark picked the fried chicken sandwich, house pickles, mint, siracha mayo and coriander. Tender chicken served in a sweet brioche bun with lots of fresh herbs.  A tasty dish however not a patch on our chicken sandwich from Twelve Triangles Kitchen Table.

Plus curried panisse, cardamom puree, pickle chili, herbs and crispy lentils.  This French chickpea fritters were inviting, just a little more crispiness and they would have been perfect.

I picked the loaded fries with fried chicken and katsu.  Did you know that Katsu isn’t actually the sauce it is the panko coating of the meat?  This seems to be the same fried chicken served in the sandwich above, sliced and served atop fries and drizzled with curry sauce. Tender chicken, although it was a little thin. A passable bar meal and not Five March worthy I felt.

Our drinking companion ordered the Mapo Tofu – which is tofu in a Sichuan pepper sauce. Usually this dish is served with some ground meat – even when cooked with tofu – in Five at Phillies the ground meat has been replaced with aubergine to replicate that meaty consistency.  Another tasty bar dish, some more sauce drizzling through the chips would have made this perfect.
