Cheap lunch in the centre of Glasgow – and it’s quick as well
China Sea is a legend and 2025 marks 49 years that China Sea Restaurant has been part of the history of Glasgow.
China Sea has a mythical reputation, is it due to the two entrances?, the wierd stairwells? or being the place to get a post drink meal right in the city centre and has a dragon?
I don’t think the decor has changed in the last 49 years, and that is one of the things which makes China Sea work. It has a dragon sculpture hanging from the ceiling, kitsch Asian decorations and a sombre atmosphere. Somehow, it works. It makes me feel like I am an extra in an Agatha Christie movie – I almost expect Peter Ustinov to peer out from one of the booths.
The restaurant has a variety of menus on offer from their popular lunch time special to pre-theatre menu and a la carte menu, and there is a secret Chinese menu. The lunch and pre-theatre menus as popular for those wanting a quick and affordable meal.

What we ate and drank at China Sea
Chicken and Sweetcorn soup, hot and tasty.
Prawn Cocktail – For a budget lunch deal this was a good serving, creamy sauce and a balance of iceberg/shrimps.
Both of us picked egg fried rice, chips are available as well.
Chicken Hong Kong Style -Chicken was well cooked but lacking in flavour. Filling but not great.
Beef with green pepper and black bean sauce. Good not to see this dish filled with slices of onion which is usually the case. Could have done with a splash more of black beans in the sauce to give it that sourness. Good amount for the price.
Verdict
It isn’t the best Chinese food we have ever eaten, however at £12.90 for two courses this is still a bargain.
In 12:05, starter arrived 12:10, mains at 12:20 and bill at 12:35 – express lunch!
Recommended for a quick lunch. Near to Glasgow Central Railway Station.
