Wimpy in Kilmarnock

Going back in time to Wimpy in Kilmarnock

Kilmarnock, isn’t the first place you think of that will still have a Wimpy, or maybe it does.  Like Kilmarnock, Wimpy was once somewhere to go and has been left to the side and forgotten about.  The Colonel was jealous of our Dingwall Wimpy experience and wanted to recapture his youth with a visit to Wimpy Kilmarnock.  Never one to say no to a bit of lunch, we whizzed down the M77 .

This Wimpy isn’t a full stand alone venue, you’ll find it inside The Garage Leisure Complex.  If you look just above the small bus, you’ll see the Wimpy sign.

Enter through the door here and walk down the welcoming and inviting hallway…

Once through this second set of doors, we find the bowling alley, walk past the arcade machines and you will find WIMPY!  This was an adventure in itself and we hadn’t even tried anything yet.

We are surprised to see a clean, tidy and well maintained restaurant – a complete opposite to some of the McD’s I have visited.

We slide into a booth and look at the menus, which are also spotless.  Top cleanliness points Wimpy.

What to order?  For a small Wimpy, there was a surprisingly large amount on offer. We make our choice and the Colonel ventures up to the lone member of staff to order.

We watch as our ingredients are pulled out of the fridge/freezer and cooked freshly… a slight optimism for this.  Not too long after our order appears at our table.  Proper service. No plates or cutlery, however each piece of food is wrapped to keep in the heat in.

Review Wimpy Kilmarnock

An original quarter pounder with cheese meal for myself ( £8.95) and a Big and Mighty  meal (£12.95) for the Colonel.

Review Wimpy Kilmarnock

My original quarter  pounder with cheese, seemed to have arrived without cheese. Maybe this was what would have given it some taste?  The oatmeal bun was cool, like just out the fridge cool, the meat…like a cheap burger. The chips were OK, but needed a ton of salt and some ketchup to give them some flavour.

Review Wimpy KilmarnockThe big and mighty looked much better with 1/4lb patty, bacon, cheese slice, pork Bendy frankfurter, two battered onion rings, and Wimpy Ketchup. This was filling, average taste. Not a patch on Burger King or McDonalds. He liked it for the nostalgia factor but as an actual meal he won’t be rushing back. Definitely didn’t taste of fresh food. 100% needed the tomato sauce that was on it.

Verdict

The service was quick, venue clean, but the food let it down.  It really was like stepping back in time to when burgers tasted like cardboard.

There is one left to visit in Scotland in Fraserburgh….we’ll see.
