We usually order takeaway from Okome Shawlands, as we do like the quality of their sushi. However, it was a Friday night and an impromptu date night so we booked a table.

Inside OKOME Shawlands
OKOME is a relaxed option for an informal lunch or dinner in Shawlands. The menu is impressively broad, covering ramen, rice bowls, poke bowls, bibimbap, sushi, sashimi and tempura. There are also clearly marked vegetarian and vegan choices, making it a handy place for groups with different tastes.

With so much on offer, deciding what to order may take a while. We chose two very different dishes: a warming bowl of chilli tofu ramen and the restaurant’s mixed OKOME sushi set.
Chilli tofu ramen
The chilli tofu ramen arrived looking colourful and comforting, with tofu and vegetables sitting in a warming broth. It was a welcome meat-free choice and the chilli brought flavour to the bowl without making it overwhelmingly hot.
There were, however, two things that would have improved it. The portion needed more nori to make it feel like a properly satisfying bowl of ramen. It also did not come with an egg, and we could not see an option to add one. A seasoned ramen egg would have added richness and made the dish feel more complete.

OKOME sushi set
I ordered the OKOME sushi set, a mixed platter offering a good introduction to the restaurant’s sushi menu. A combination like this is ideal when you want variety without ordering several individual rolls.

The platter made an attractive arrival at the table and gave us a mixture of flavours and textures in one order. It was the stronger of our two main choices and would be our pick for anyone visiting OKOME Shawlands primarily for sushi.

Peach and apple cocktail cans
To drink, we tried one peach cocktail can and one apple cocktail can. Both were fun alternatives to the usual beer or soft drink and suited the casual Japanese dining experience. The peach version was fruitier and sweeter, while the apple can had a fresher, crisper character.

Is OKOME Shawlands worth visiting?
OKOME Shawlands is a convenient choice for casual Japanese food in Glasgow’s Southside, particularly if you are dining with people who want different things. The extensive menu and good selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes are definite strengths.
Our mixed sushi set was the highlight and is what we would order again. The chilli tofu ramen had enjoyable flavours but fell short on substance: it needed more nori, and the option to add an egg would have been welcome. Overall, OKOME is worth considering for an easy-going sushi meal in Shawlands, although ramen lovers may want a more generous bowl.
Glasgow Foodie verdict
