Salt & Sea Kitchen, The Barras, Glasgow

July 1, 2021 by Local Chef Leave a Comment

Head east for Glasgow's latest foodie addition

Local Chef was invited to the launch weekend of Glasgow's latest addition to the food truck scene, Salt & Sea Kitchen, here’s what he thought.

Parked on the corner of Stevenson Street West at the Barras Market, it's a welcome addition to an area that is expanding as an exciting social hub.

As the name suggests, the focus here is on fresh seafood, cooked expertly and delivered in style by seasoned chef Kev and the team. With a wealth of experience and an eye for detail, their model is looking good for success, but the food really speaks for itself!

The selection will change as the week's pass but on our visit there were bacon & cheese topped oysters, monkfish tacos, lobster buns, scallop chowder, ceviche and a selection of loaded fries (cajun shrimp, jerk chicken, carne asada).

I was pleased to see a vegan donner kebab on the specials board, nicely spiced chunks of mushroom and soy protein in a big bun with sriracha mayo, it firmly struck a note as the favourite vegan kebab I've eaten so far! Great portion size too, I struggled to finish my excellent, hand-cut chips so I took them home and had them later, still amazing even after reheating!

Lynsey had monkfish tacos, soft shell tortilla with big chunks of freshly breaded monkfish tail, salad and zingy mango salsa, I could tell, and she concurred, it was an absolute delight.

She also had a go at the jerk chicken loaded fries, spiced beautifully, topped off with purple slaw, another generous portion!

Kev and the team have a permanent pitch in this location and are here every Friday to Sunday 2 pm-8 pm. It's worth going just to eat their food but there are a few cool bars open now as well as all the other wonders of The Barras!

Launch for us was on the house but the prices were listed as: Monkfish Tacos £8.50, Vegan Donner £6.50, Sea Salt Fries £3.50, Jerk Chicken Fries £6.50.
